My Personal Story

So, today I would like to share my own personal story and let you know why I do what I do here at Savannahsmiles Life Coaching. I consider myself to be a teacher and a healer in the life coaching business.

Have you ever heard the term, “The Wounded Healer?” The wounded healer is a term that was created by psychologist, Carl Jung in the 1950’s. His idea of “the wounded healer,” basically claims that a person is compelled to help and heal others because the person himself has been "wounded.”

Now to make a long story short…

As a life coach and a wounded healer my purpose in life, the passion I have for helping others, and the art of teaching and healing derive from my own personal hardships I have endured throughout my life.

I grew up in an alcoholic and codependent household. I was emotionally neglected and sexually abused as a child. I began drinking, doing drugs, and having sex at a very young age. I had been sent to live in a group home facility for troubled kids; I got pregnant twice and had been arrested once all before the age of 15 yrs old. I grew up with feelings of unworthiness and low self-esteem.

In my twenties, I married an alcoholic and remained in a physical and emotional abusive relationship for 7 years. I was diagnosed with anxiety and chronic depression. After the divorce of my marriage, in my thirties, I became involved temporarily in a couple of different relationships with men who were emotionally unavailable in one way, shape, or form. I ended up having a child and was romantically involved with a person who had severe drug addiction problems. The result was becoming a single mother, struggling hard in life to make ends meet.

While raising a daughter all on my own and working a full-time job I finally went back to school and earned my degrees in Human Services and Psychology due to my passions for helping people and the study of human behavior.

Although I’ve gone through many trials and tribulations throughout my life, I’m truly grateful for the difficulties I’ve gone through in my past. The most painful times in my life were the most deeply transformative; without them I would not be who I am or where I am today. I have always been committed to self- awareness, self-growth and continually work on myself to become the best version of me.

Ever since I was younger, I’ve always known I wanted to help people. I just didn’t have any idea back then how. I only knew that I wouldn’t be content in my own life unless my life amounted to servicing others in some capacity. It wasn’t until I got much older that I was capable of helping others. First, I had to heal myself from my own past traumas. It was then, I realized I really wanted to help people heal and create positive changes in their lives, and through making these positive changes would allow them to experience a more rewarding life. This is my story and what led me to becoming a Life Coach.

I believe our life experiences good or bad, are merely learning opportunities for self and spiritual growth. We all are a work in progress. I have experienced a great deal of healing work through counseling, Ala-non meetings, spiritualality, practicing positive affirmations, and reading numerous self-help books over the years. Two of my favorite quotes about life were once stated by Booker T. Washington and Louisa May Alcott - “Success is not to be measured by the position someone has reached in life; but the obstacles he has overcome while trying to succeed,” and “I am not afraid of storms, for I am learning how to sail my ship.”
